Heart Evangelista recently looked back on the time she became a video jockey (VJ) for the music channel, MYX, in the 2000s, recalling it as one of the memorable chapters of her early career.
In the pilot episode of the second season of Heart World, Heart said being a VJ allowed audiences to see her true personality when she was frequently cast in similar roles on television, often portraying “maarte” or high-maintenance characters.
She said, "I was given a role that was my role for a long time, kasi parang naging character role ko na yung pagiging maarte. When I auditioned for MYX and I became a VJ, I said oh my gosh, this is what it feels like to be myself. And I remember styling myself—those were all my clothes."
According to Heart, hosting on MYX enabled her to show a more relaxed and authentic side of herself on camera, especially since working on soap operas often came with strict requirements.
"Yung naalala ko lang 'pag nagmi-MYX ako, may time na nakakatakas ako sa mom ko, kasi from ASAP, from the variety show, after that I would have a two-hour break. And then lahat ng nanliligaw sa 'kin, do'n ko kinikita. Sa studio lang naman."
She noted that the experience allowed viewers to see that she was very different from the characters she played. The stint, she added, became an important moment in her career as it helped people get to know her beyond her scripted roles.
Back in 2018, Heart was reunited with her former VJs like Iya Villania, Luis Manzano, and Nikki Gil when she graced the MYX Music Awards.
In a past interview, Heart described them as her "first showbiz family."
Meanwhile, Heart returns to TV via the new season of her reality series, Heart World, where she shares her most personal and unfiltered chapter yet. It airs every Saturday, 9:30 p.m. on GMA.
Episodes, highlights, and other exclusive content of Heart World are available on GMANetwork.com and on GMA Play, the official streaming video app of GMA Network.
Global Pinoys can also catch the reality series via GMA Pinoy TV.
