Hull City mark perfect Premier League return
Hull City made a dream return to the Premier League with a memorable 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the MKM Stadium. Back in the top flight for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign, the Tigers produced an energetic and disciplined display to secure three points. Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Nobel Mendy doubled the advantage before half-time. The result ended Hull’s 10-match winless Premier League run against United, which had previously included two draws and eight defeats.
Hull signalled their intent early as Lewie Coyle delivered a dangerous cross that Noussair Mazraoui cleared ahead of Oli McBurnie. Manchester United responded through Bryan Mbeumo, whose powerful volley forced Konstantinos Tzolakis into a strong save. Ryan Giles then caused further concern for the visitors with a cross that required United goalkeeper Senne Lammens to tip over. Hull’s pressure eventually paid off from the resulting corner.
Set-piece strength earns Tigers control
Lammens initially did well to keep out McBurnie’s stretching effort at the back post, pushing the ball against the post and away from the line. However, Ajayi reacted fastest to the loose ball and fired home to give Hull a deserved lead. The goal exposed familiar frailties in United’s defending from set-pieces. Since Michael Carrick returned to the club, only four Premier League teams have conceded more goals from corners than United’s six.
Hull continued to threaten through dead-ball situations and deservedly extended their lead in the 38th minute. Regan Slater’s free-kick found Mendy, who delivered a composed header past Lammens. It meant Hull scored twice in the opening half, more than they had managed across their previous five Premier League meetings with United combined. Sergej Jakirovic’s side entered the interval with a commanding advantage and impressive control of the contest.
United unable to find a response
Manchester United attempted to raise the tempo after the break, with Marcus Rashford making his first appearance since late 2024. His pace created problems, while Mbeumo remained one of United’s most threatening attacking outlets. Cunha also helped open up space for Mbeumo, but the forward could only shoot directly at Tzolakis. The Hull goalkeeper completed an excellent debut with a clean sheet.
United registered 21 shots and five efforts on target, accumulating 1.81 expected goals, but they were rarely able to sustain clear-cut pressure. Tzolakis was seriously tested only on a couple of occasions as Hull defended their box with composure. At the other end, Mohamed Belloumi curled an effort over after cutting in from the right, while Cody Drameh sent a low shot narrowly wide. Hull remained the more convincing threat even while protecting their lead.
A statement start to the season
Having become the first Championship side to earn promotion from sixth place since Blackpool in 2010, Hull could not have asked for a stronger opening statement. Their sharpness at set-pieces, defensive resilience and willingness to attack gave them a deserved victory. Hull have now won all five Premier League matches in which they have held a lead of two or more goals at half-time. For Jakirovic and his players, this result provides a major confidence boost for the challenges ahead.
