MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has canceled classes in all levels in areas affected by the powerful earthquake that hit General Santos City in Mindanao.
“I am ordering the suspension of classes in all levels across affected areas in Mindanao until further notice. The safety of our children comes first. DepEd (Department of Education) will coordinate with local government units on this,” Marcos said.
“The national government is moving and we will not leave Mindanao behind,” he added.
Today, June 8, is the opening of classes in public schools nationwide.
The President said authorities are continuing to monitor the situation in Mindanao.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani on Monday morning.
Tsunami warnings remain in effect across several coastal provinces in Mindanao.
