Nikola Jokic turned down contract extensions with the Nuggets in each of the last two NBA offseasons, but he’s made it clear that he wants to be in Denver for the remainder of his career.
During Nuggets media day on Monday, Jokic told reporters that he’ll sign his extension with Denver next offseason.
“I’m going to sign next year,” Jokic said. “If they want me.”
This decision seems to be purely financial. By waiting until next summer to sign his new deal, Jokic becomes eligible to receive a five-year, $360 million supermax extension — which would be the richest in NBA history.
Jokic finished top-2 in NBA MVP voting in each of the last six seasons, winning the award three times. The eight-time NBA All-Star and one-time champion is consistently one of the best players in the world every time he steps on the court.
This past season, Jokic averaged 27.7 points while also leading the NBA in both rebounds (12.9) and assists (10.7) per game.
Jokic and the Nuggets will begin their 2026-27 regular-season campaign with a season-opening matchup against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Oct. 22.
