Patrick Mahomes gets a camp first ahead of Chiefs preseason opener

Wide receiver has been one of the biggest storylines at Kansas City Chiefs training camp over the past couple of weeks. Xavier Worthy sat out all of last week with a right shoulder sprain, while the team has been carefully building up Rashee Rice’s workload following offseason knee surgery. Meanwhile, fifth-round rookie Cyrus Allen has emerged as one of camp’s standout performers, reportedly forming a strong rapport with Patrick Mahomes, and Tyquan Thornton has spent time working with the first-team offense as well.

But with injuries piling up, those four — Worthy, Rice, Thornton, and Allen — hadn’t all been on the field together. Until Monday. That practice marked the first time this camp that Mahomes’ top four receivers all took part in on-field work on the same day. Worthy was the lone player among the group who didn’t take part in full 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 reps, though he could be cleared for full participation in the coming days.

With the Chiefs’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams just days away (Saturday, Aug. 15), it’s a meaningful step forward as the team ramps up for the regular season.

Mahomes, for his part, is coming off ACL and LCL surgery but has been a full go throughout camp. Teammates have raved about his form all summer, saying he looks like his old self — and if he enters the preseason opener with his full group of pass catchers healthy, there’s real reason to believe this team can climb back to the top of the AFC. Add in Travis Kelce, still among the league’s premier tight ends, and a projected step forward on the offensive line, and the pieces are there.

The rest of the week’s practices will be worth watching closely. Should Worthy work his way back to full participation, Mahomes could enter Saturday’s matchup with the Rams with his complete receiving corps.
