A legend in the sport of golf is returning to try her hand at winning one final major.

On Tuesday, March 31, Michelle Wie West announced she’s ending her three-year retirement in an effort to play in the U.S. Open for a final time. The 2014 U.S. Women’s Open champion and mother of two said goodbye to golf three years ago at Pebble Beach.

However, she’ll be back in the field for the U.S. Open on June 4-7 at The Riviera Country Club, according to an announcement she made on Instagram.

“With one final year of eligibility from my victory in 2014 and the Championship headed to an iconic venue that means so much to me, I am excited to announce that I’ll be teeing it up at the U.S. Women’s Open at Riviera in June!” Wie West wrote on Instagram.

Wie West, a five-time winner on the LPGA, is eligible for this year’s event based on the 10-year exemption from her victory at Pinehurst No. 2 after her timeline was extended due to her maternity exemption.

Wie West and husband Jonnie welcomed a son, Jagger, in October 2024. Daughter Makenna was in a stroller following the action when Wie West played at Pebble Beach in 2023 when she missed the cut, but made a 30-footer for par on No. 18 to end her final round.

“You never say never,” Wie West said at the time, “but a very slim chance probably.”

That slim chance is finally here.
