The Detroit Tigers are giving one of their veteran pitchers another chance in the majors.
The Tigers have announced that they have called up relief pitcher Tanner Rainey from Triple-A Toledo. In addition, the Tigers shared that pitcher Enmanuel De Jesus has been placed on paternity leave.
Rainey has not yet pitched at the major league level this season. Instead, he has appeared in 39 games with Triple-A Toledo, where he has a 5-3 record, a 2.32 ERA, and 60 strikeouts. Overall, he has had a solid year in Triple-A, so it makes sense that the Tigers are giving him an opportunity on their major league roster.
Rainey appeared in 13 games last season split between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers, where he had a 0-1 record, a 11.17 ERA, and 11 strikeouts. Overall, the eight-year MLB veteran undoubtedly had his struggles last season but will now be looking to impress after landing this latest call-up to Detroit’s roster.
In 211 games over eight MLB seasons split between the Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals, Pirates, and Tigers, Rainey has posted a 5-11 record, a 5.52 ERA, 15 saves, and 247 strikeouts. He also won the World Series with the Nationals during the 2019 season.
