MANILA, Philippines — The newest "Scary Movie" entry will deliver some much-needed laughs, says Marlon Wayans who is returning to the franchise after two decades.
Marlon co-wrote and portrayed Shorty Meeks in the first two "Scary Movie" films alongside his brother Shawn while another sibling Keenen directed. The brothers' nephew Craig was also a writer on the second movie.
The Wayans were absent from the next three entries, the forgettable last one released in 2013, but all four are returning for the sixth coming out this month alongside Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen's other sibling Damon Jr. and Kim as well as Craig's brother Gregg.
In a video interview, Marlon admitted that he and his brothers never thought about the impact they would make while making the first "Scary Movie."
"We were just artists that wanted to make noise and make people laugh," Marlon said, acknowledging that many at the time did not understand their process. "We knew we were on to something, we knew the truth, culture, and humor we had."
The comedian called the original "Scary Movie" from 2000 the first of its kind — a parody developed by African-Americans and featuring a diverse cast that included Anna Faris and Regina Hall.
"Everybody needs a laugh," said the actor, claiming its been a while since a good comedy movie hit theaters. "Everything's so serious, and the world just needs to [simmer down], come together, laugh at our differences."
Marlon even called him and his brothers "equal opportunity offenders" where eveyone can laugh at their jokes, "Ain't nothing like a laugh to get the party started."
Asked what advice he had for people watching horror movies, Marlon simply suggested to listen and follow what the Black characters do.
That includes walking away from a strange noise and not picking up calls from unknown numbers.
"There are definitely rules, but ask any Black person [and listen to them]. We know how to survive, we survive real life, f*** a movie!" Marlon ended.
The new "Scary Movie" premieres in Philippine cinemas — rated R-16 and without cuts — beginning June 10.
