MANILA, Philippines — Veteran actress Julie Andrews will not be reprising her iconic role of Clarisse Renaldi, former queen of Genovia, in a planned third "The Princess Diaries" movie.
Franchise star and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway previously announced that a third film was in development with her involvement. The last movie came out back in 2004.
Andrews, however, confirmed her non-participation in any future projects to several media outlets while promoting "Shy," a children's book she wrote with daughter Emma Walton Hamilton, inspired by her own poodle.
The award-winning thespian told The Hollywood Reporter she doesn't think there is a chance she'd return for another entry, especially given she's retired from live-action projects.
"I think the absolute truth is that I think I’m really past all that now," Andrews said. "I'm not completely retired, but it's a different kind of work that I do these days — [writing] books, and I do a lot of recording of podcasts and voiceovers. But truly, I don't think I should be a part of it."
Hamilton chipped in that her mother was thankful not to be doing hair and makeup anymore, though Andrews added it was "still lovely to be working on things... but not necessarily on camera."
Andrews doesn't have any idea what a third "Princess Diaries" movie will dive into but expressed hope in Hathaway and author Meg Cabot, who wrote the books the franchise is based on.
The actress said something similar to Today, believing the franchise has to continue with Hathaway's Mia Thermopolis, who is now queen of Genovia.
"I'm not quite sure how they're dealing with that. But it's too late for me to do it," Andrews added. "It's [Mia's] story. It's not really mine."
She admitted to InStyle that the creative team for the third movie approached her several times last year, asking if she would play Clarisse again but she made the difficult decision to decline.
"It was very very hard to say 'no,' but I did because I thought I had a wonderful ride," Andrews ended. "This one I felt would flourish very well and wouldn't need Granny going in there at my age."
The third "Princess Diaries" film will be the sophomore directorial outing of "Crazy Rich Asians" and "Raya and the Last Dragon" writer Adele Lim, who has extensive small-screen experience.
Her producing partner Naia Cucukov joins Melissa Stack as an executive producer while original franchise producer Debra Martin Chase is also on board.
