MANILA, Philippines — Sarah Michelle Gellar broke a sad news for fans of her iconic '90s vampire slayer role after she revealed that the awaited “Buffy” reboot is no longer pushing through.
“I am really sad have share this but I wanted you to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale,’” Gellar told her millions of fans in a video uploaded on Instagram.
She thanked award-winning director Chloe Zhao for considering on taking on the reboot’s pilot episode.
“If the apocalypse comes… you can still beep me,” Gellar ended her video, hinting that she is not closing doors at any future “Buffy” projects.
Reports of a “Buffy” sequel series at Hulu surfaced in February 2025 with Gellar set to reprise her role and serve as one of its executive producers.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was a popular TV series created by Joss Whedon that aired from 1997 to 2003. The titular Buffy lives as an ordinary high school student who is a chosen one from a line of female vampire slayers. She gets help from her high school friends at fictional Sunnydale as they battle vampires and evil forces.
Its popularity created spinoffs, the most popular of which is "Angel," starring David Boreanaz as the titular vampire out for redemption. Boreanaz left the main show to star in "Angel," which aired from 1999 to 2004.
