Should you eat fruit before or after a meal?

After meals, many Vietnamese families have the habit of "refreshing dessert" with a few slices of mango, jackfruit, longan, or a glass of fruit juice. For students, fruit is also considered a healthy snack instead of sweets. However, knowing how to eat fruit in a way that is both delicious and good for health is not simple at all. Many people are unknowingly turning this nutritious food into a "burden" for their digestive system and blood sugar metabolism.

Fruits are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. However, the important thing is not just "eating fruit," but also eating the right kind, at the right time, and in the right amount.

Fruits are a rich source of vitamins for children.

Whether to eat fruit before or after meals is a question many people are interested in. In reality, there's no single "golden hour" that applies to everyone, but from a digestive and blood sugar control perspective, the ideal time to eat fruit is usually about 1-2 hours after a main meal or as a snack between meals.

Eating fruit immediately after a heavy meal, especially one high in protein and fat, can easily cause bloating, gas, and indigestion due to the fructose content. This discomfort is even more pronounced for people with stomach problems or irritable bowel syndrome. Many people have a habit of eating fruit right after a meal thinking it aids digestion, but this isn't entirely appropriate. Fruit should be considered a healthy snack rather than an additional food item after a heavy meal. Eating it at the right time will help the body absorb nutrients better and reduce bloating and indigestion.

What kind of fruit should students eat for dessert?

For children and schoolchildren, fruit not only provides vitamins but also helps form healthy eating habits from a young age. However, many parents prefer overly sweet fruits or replace them entirely with bottled juice.

Suitable fruits for dessert for students include: bananas, apples, oranges, tangerines, guavas, dragon fruit, papayas, watermelons, etc.

These fruits are rich in vitamins, water, and fiber, which help support digestion, boost immunity, and prevent constipation in children. Parents should prioritize fresh, seasonal fruits of various colors and encourage children to eat them whole instead of drinking juice.

Fruits high in sugar: Delicious, but shouldn't be eaten without restraint.

Ripe mangoes, longan, lychee, jackfruit, durian… are fruits that many people love for their rich sweetness and delicious aroma. However, these are also fruits with a relatively high content of natural sugar.

Eating too much at once can: cause a rapid increase in blood sugar; cause heartburn and bloating; lead to excess energy and weight gain; and is not suitable for people with diabetes, fatty liver disease, or obesity.

It's important not to misunderstand that "sugar from fruit is harmless." Even though it's natural sugar, consuming too much can still lead to excess energy and metabolic disorders. People with diabetes or who are overweight should pay particular attention to their intake of intensely sweet fruits like jackfruit, longan, ripe mango, or durian.

Common mistake: Drinking juice instead of eating fresh fruit.

Many people believe that fruit juice is "more nutritious" because it's easier to drink and absorbs quickly. However, when juiced, most of the fiber is removed, while the sugar content becomes more concentrated.

Meanwhile, eating fresh fruit helps: Preserve fiber; Slow down sugar absorption; Create a longer-lasting feeling of fullness; and is good for the digestive system.

Juice cannot completely replace fresh fruit. If consumed regularly, especially with added sugar, both children and adults risk weight gain and blood sugar disorders.

Is it good to eat fruit too late in the evening?

Many people have a habit of eating fruit between 9 and 10 pm, thinking it's a "light" snack that won't cause weight gain. However, eating fruit too late, especially sugary varieties, can cause blood sugar levels to spike while the body is less active to burn off the energy.

Additionally, some people experience bloating, acid reflux, difficulty sleeping, and increased feelings of heartburn.

According to nutrition experts, the ideal time to eat fruit in the evening is at least 2-3 hours before bedtime, and it's best to prioritize light, less sweet fruits like kiwi, apples, pears, or dragon fruit.
