Many people love coffee but are concerned about acid reflux. To avoid this, they can adjust their habits.

According to China Times , gastroenterologist Li Baixian (China) has suggested three simple ways for people at risk of or suffering from gastroesophageal reflux to safely enjoy coffee.

On his personal page, Dr. Ly stated that in his practice, he frequently receives questions from "coffee lovers" suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): "Do I have to give up coffee for the rest of my life?" or "Does adding milk help me feel better?"

According to him, some patients, after making appropriate adjustments, can continue to enjoy coffee without worsening their reflux condition.

Choose dark roasted coffee.

According to Dr. Li, the discomfort after drinking coffee may be related to caffeine – a substance that reduces pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter, making it easier for stomach acid to reflux upwards. Meanwhile, dark roasted coffee usually has lower acidity than light roasted coffee, so it is less irritating to the stomach.

Cold brew coffee is preferred.

Cold brew coffee is extracted at low temperatures over an extended period, resulting in a milder flavor and lower perceived acidity, which may reduce stomach irritation in some people.

Conversely, coffee brewed with hot water may release more irritating compounds. In addition, excessively hot drinks (above 65 degrees Celsius) can directly irritate the esophageal lining and worsen discomfort.

Therefore, people with stomach problems are advised to choose warm, cool, or cold brew coffee.

Consider carefully before adding milk.

Compared to black coffee, milk-based coffees like lattes or cappuccinos can reduce the stimulating effect due to the protein and fat content in the milk. However, Dr. Li emphasized that this effect is not the same for everyone.

He pointed out two factors to consider. First, the fat in milk can slow down gastric emptying, causing food to remain in the stomach longer, thereby increasing the risk of reflux. Second, in people with lactose intolerance, combining coffee with milk can cause bloating, increase abdominal pressure, and push stomach acid back up into the esophagus.

Therefore, whether adding milk to coffee to "protect the stomach" depends on individual sensitivities. Those who wish to try this method can prioritize low-fat or plant-based milk, while monitoring their body's reaction.

If bloating or reflux worsens after drinking coffee with milk, they should stop consuming it to avoid exacerbating the symptoms.
