According to British media, Gabby Agbonlahor's statement demanding harsh penalties for players withdrawing from the national team has drawn criticism, given his own past similar actions.

Former England international Gabby Agbonlahor became the focus of controversy after suggesting the Premier League should suspend players who withdraw from their national team. However, this statement was quickly met with backlash as his past was brought to light.

In the talkSPORT program, Agbonlahor expressed his frustration at the wave of withdrawals during the FIFA Days in March, particularly the case of Arsenal players. According to the figures mentioned, 23 Premier League players withdrew, with Arsenal alone accounting for 11 names, including Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, and Leandro Trossard.

The former Aston Villa striker believes that many players performed normally in the League Cup final but then requested to withdraw from the national team, which he considers "wrong." Therefore, Agbonlahor proposed a strict measure: players who miss national team training would be suspended for the next Premier League match.

"I'm sure if this rule were in place, players would stop withdrawing," Agbonlahor emphasized. He also called on England captain Harry Kane to speak out to rectify the situation.

Agbonlahor has been making a series of attention-grabbing statements recently.

However, Agbonlahor's statement was quickly questioned for its consistency. In 2011, he himself had requested to withdraw from the England squad due to a hamstring injury. Remarkably, just six days later, Agbonlahor still started in a Premier League match against Tottenham.

This detail has led many to believe that the former striker is now facing a situation where his own tactics backfire. Given the packed schedule and increasing pressure at his club, players requesting to withdraw from the national team is not a new phenomenon.

England manager Thomas Tuchel also spoke out in defense of players like Rice and Saka, asserting that they genuinely had fitness issues and there was no reason to doubt their honesty.

According to FIFA regulations, called-up players are required to report for training, but there are still mechanisms for medical checks and agreements with clubs in case of injury. This makes the issue not simply a matter of awareness, but also involves fitness management and injury risk.

Agbonlahor's statement was therefore not only controversial, but also exposed a familiar paradox in modern football: the fine line between national responsibility and club interests.
