In Vietnamese culture, the family has long been considered the place that nurtures love, closeness, and moral values between generations. Parents provide care and have high expectations for their children; children are taught gratitude and respect for their parents.
However, along with the rapid changes in society, the way generations perceive family, privacy, autonomy, and the expression of emotions is also undergoing significant shifts. Parents may think they are "caring for their children," but children may perceive it as control. Parents believe they are "disciplining," while children may feel their thoughts and feelings are being denied. These differences, if not shared and resolved, can gradually create distance within a single home.
