Many people aim to reach a certain number of steps each day to improve their health. However, walking enough steps does not necessarily mean losing fat.

Simply walking at a steady pace doesn't guarantee that your body will burn a lot of calories; speed and intensity are what determine the effectiveness of fat loss, according to the Hindustan Times .

Walking slowly does not activate fat burning.

Walking is a simple, easy activity suitable for many ages. However, simply taking slow steps doesn't burn many calories.

Bobby, a fitness trainer in the US, says the most important factor when walking to lose fat is speed. Maintaining a suitable heart rate helps the body use stored fat for energy.

According to Bobby, to burn fat effectively, you need to exercise in heart rate zone 2, also known as the fat-burning zone. This is a moderate level of activity, where the heart beats faster than normal but not excessively fast.

At this level, the body begins to use stored fat as its primary energy source. If you walk too slowly, like you're just strolling, your heart rate won't increase enough. At that point, the body hasn't switched to burning fat.

Focus on intensity rather than the number of steps.

The number of steps taken each day is a basic form of exercise. However, focusing solely on the number while ignoring intensity will limit the effectiveness of fat loss.

When breathing becomes faster than normal and the skin begins to warm up, the body has entered the fat-burning zone. This state indicates that the heart rate has increased enough to trigger the process of using stored fat.

Feeling completely relaxed throughout the walk often means the intensity isn't sufficient. Walking with a clear purpose and a determined stride is more effective than a leisurely stroll.

Signs that walking helps you lose fat

A person can talk but cannot sing while walking at the correct intensity. This criterion helps determine if the heart rate has increased to an appropriate level.

While you can still speak complete sentences, you may feel breathless if you try to sing, indicating your body is exercising at a moderate intensity. Simultaneously, you'll experience slightly rapid breathing and a warming sensation in your body. This is a clear sign of the fat-burning zone.

Conversely, if you can comfortably walk and sing at the same time, your heart rate will remain low. In that case, your body hasn't yet switched to using stored fat as its primary energy source.

Recommended speed for optimal performance

Bobby recommends a pace suitable for the average adult ranging from 4.5 to 6.1 km/hour. However, heart rate remains the most important indicator.

The exerciser should go a little faster than their usual pace. The speed needs to be enough to create a slight challenge but still be sustainable for an extended period.

Walking remains a safe and easy form of exercise to maintain. However, exercisers need to pay attention to their speed and heart rate to optimize effectiveness.
