After more than 20 years on the market, the Toyota Highlander SUV is officially undergoing a major transformation with its all-new 2027 model. No longer just a regular upgrade, the Highlander is now a fully electric vehicle, marking a significant turning point in Toyota's product strategy.

The 2027 Highlander is not simply a new generation – it's a complete transformation. Toyota has confirmed it will no longer offer any internal combustion engine versions of this model. This is a bold move, especially given that many automakers are temporarily suspending their electric vehicle development plans due to declining consumer demand.
With the Highlander, Toyota demonstrates strong confidence in its electrification strategy. The 2027 Highlander EV's appearance inherits the latest design language from the Prius and the bZ electric vehicle line. The front end stands out with its slim LED headlights, aerodynamic "hammer" grille, and hidden door handles.

Overall, the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV SUV is significantly larger than its predecessor: 198.8 inches long (up 3.9 inches), 78.3 inches wide (up 2.3 inches), and a wheelbase extended to 120.1 inches – an increase of nearly 20 cm, resulting in a substantial increase in interior space.

Toyota says the new dimensions of the 2027 Highlander EV not only give it a more robust appearance, but also optimize battery placement, improve third-row accessibility, and increase passenger space.
5.jpg
The interior space is designed to be minimalist yet fully equipped. The 14-inch central screen and 12.3-inch digital instrument panel are technological highlights. Toyota has retained physical buttons for the air conditioning system – a major plus in an era where everything is "touchscreen-based".

SofTex upholstery, heated front seats, 64-color ambient interior lighting, and a panoramic sunroof – the largest ever on a Toyota – are among the standout standard and optional features. The second row features individual Captain seats, with an optional bench seat to increase seating capacity to seven.

Toyota confidently claims the third row is comfortable enough for adults, with amenities such as USB-C charging ports, air vents, and slightly reclining seatbacks. The cargo capacity reaches 1,292 liters with the third row folded down, and 450 liters with the seats upright – still significantly more than many SUVs in its segment, though not as spacious as the Grand Highlander.

The 2027 Highlander EV uses a fully electric powertrain with multiple configurations. The front-wheel-drive XLE version uses a 77 kWh battery, delivering 221 horsepower, 198 lb-ft of torque, and a range of 287 miles (462 km). The AWD version uses the same battery for a range of 270 miles, or an optional upgrade to a 95.8 kWh battery for a range of 320 miles (515 km).

The top-of-the-line Limited comes standard with AWD and a large battery, producing a maximum output of 338 horsepower and 323 lb-ft of torque. It supports DC fast charging via a NACS standard port, capable of charging from 10–80% in just 30 minutes (under ideal conditions). Plug & Charge smart charging, pre-warming the battery before charging, and a dual-mode home charger are standard features.

The all-new 2027 Toyota Highlander is the first model to integrate the Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 safety technology package, featuring a range of upgraded features such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and active driving assist.
13.jpg
The Limited trim also includes traffic jam assist, automatic parking assist, a panoramic camera, and lane change assist. A standout but often overlooked feature is vehicle-to-load – allowing the vehicle to power external devices, turning the Highlander into a backup power source when needed.

Although Toyota hasn't announced official pricing, the Highlander EV will likely have a starting price above $50,000. The vehicle will be manufactured in Kentucky (USA) with batteries from a factory in North Carolina – helping to qualify for tax exemptions and reduce costs.
